Puppy Vaccination Schedule

Puppy Vaccination Schedule

Vaccinations are an essential part of your dog's routine care by helping to protect your pup from various diseases that could be potentially life-threatening. Below, our Bakersfield vets share everything you need to know about the recommended vaccination schedule for your puppy.

Why Should You Get Your Puppy Vaccinated?

Just like the case of vaccines designed for use by people, puppy vaccinations in the Bakersfield area help to protect your pet from a vast variety of serious, and even fatal, diseases that can spread like wildfire between unvaccinated dogs.

While it may seem inconvenient (and even a bit expensive) to bring your new puppy into your vet's office frequently throughout their first year, your puppy's first vaccinations and their renewals each year are critical to protecting them from illness and setting them up for long, healthy and happy lives.

What Diseases Can Vaccinations Help Protect My Puppy From?

Our vets in the Bakersfield area recommend the following vaccinations to help prevent and reduce the severity of illnesses like parvovirus, hepatitis, distemper, bordetella and rabies in your puppy.

Our vets will be able to recommend a set of vaccinations that are the most appropriate for your puppy based on their age, the area you live, your pup's lifestyle and other factors.

The following is the schedule of vaccinations recommended for your puppy during their first few months and the booster shots required for an adult dog throughout their life. What Are The Potential Side Effects of Routine Vaccinations For Your Puppy?

Side effects of vaccinations are quite common, including cold-like symptoms, mild fevers or lethargy. These are all signs that your puppy or adult dog is reacting appropriately to the vaccine.

Some dogs may have an allergic reaction to getting their shots. This is typically due to a sensitivity to an individual ingredient of a specific vaccine. Different breeds tend to react to some ingredients. German shepherds, various collies, and some sheepdogs are known to be sensitive to individual vaccinations. Your vet will skip any vaccines that contain ingredients that your puppy may be sensitive to.

If your puppy does have a reaction to a vaccination, take them to your vet as soon as possible and make note of the kind of vaccination they received. This will be important information to keep on hand if you move or switch vets in the future.
